Canary Cafe and Store, The Newly Born Vintage Cafe

There were so many times I tried to write my blog again since there are so many new place to grab awesome meals in Surabaya. However, my plan finally ended up with tens, uhmm I guess actually hundreds of pictures that only stucked in my gadgets or perhaps some of them are lucky enough to be posted on my social media (Instagram: @vitia_tandy or Path: Vitia Tandy). But finally after 9 months from my latest post, here comes the day when I finally post another update about my culinary experience. And since it has been so long, then I need to update something great, right? So here we go, Canary Cafe and Store, the newly born vintage cafe =)

This cafe is located in a three-floored building which actually consists of cafe (first and second floor), boutique (second floor), and photo studio (third floor). It brings a vintage concept which I adore. But if you notice, there is something different in the way you order the food and beverages besides the other cafe. You need to make your order, pay it straightly in front, find a seat, then wait for your order there. Yeah, like a semi-self-service perhaps. It is more like the way to order at Starbucks ;)

I've heard about many famous food and beverages here so let's have a try. For beverages we chose these four fabulous drinks. Choco Coconut (Rp30.000,00), Raspberry Mint Tea (Rp25.000,00), Strawberry Green Tea (Rp35.000,00), and Banana Berry (Rp30.000,00).

Choco Coconut - Raspberry Mint Tea

The Raspberry Mint Tea was so refreshing with the raspberry aroma and minty sensation. It was quite good and gave this chillin' sensation. On the other hand, the Choco Coconut tasted so unique. The blend of thick chocolate and coconut wrapped in whipped cream and shredded chocolate sprinkles were so exotic yet so creamy. A great choice for a chocolate lover =)

Choco Coconut

Strawberry Green Tea and Banana Berry gave their own different story...

Strawberry Green Tea - Banana Berry

Strawberry Green Tea is a great idea to pull apart ogura (red bean) from green tea =P Despite of the dazzling visual appearance, the strong taste of green tea somehow covered the sweet and sour of the strawberries. Then I disappointingly ended up sipping a plain green tea frappucino. Hmm, probably strawberry is not a qualified affair for green tea =P

Strawberry Green Tea

Banana Berry is the mixture of strawberry milkshake blended with banana. Besides having whipped cream, as a topping, they also showered it with roasted diced nuts and topped it with a lovely red cherry. Every single elements were balancedly mixed well. I have no other words, but I think this was the best beverage that we ordered tonight =)

Banana Berry

For the main course, we ordered two savory waffles. First of them was Waffle Katsu (Rp42.000,00). This "sandwich-like" waffle was filled with ham slices, mozzarella cheese, enoki, rougut, and some sauce. After coated with bread crumbs, it was deeply fried, and finally served with fresh vegetables. Okay, the picture can describe the taste. Three letters, Y-U-M!

Waffle Katsu

And the second savory waffle, which is the most famous dish here, is the Waffle Tower (Rp99.000,00). From the top to the bottom, there are fried onion rings, waffle, chicken katsu, assorted vegetables (onion, tomato, and lettuce), another waffle, beef patty, another assorted vegetables, and ended up with another layer of waffle. Served with two type of sauce (modified mayo and tomato based sauces), all of them tastes so heavenly. I love the beef patty the most <3 Since it has an ultimate extra size (and of course an extra price too), it can be enjoyed by two or even three people..

Waffle (Pisa) Tower =P

And of course the last part of the journey is... DESSERT!! We ordered one sweet waffle and a piece of cake. Here we go, the Banned Apple Waffle (Rp45.000,00).

Banned Apple Waffle

A piece of warm crunchy waffle, served with cubes of sweet apples, sliced banana, and almonds. Then lastly completed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and a sexy red cherry. This combination never fails, I guess..

Banned Apple Waffle

Last but not least,  a piece of good looking Cheese Tart (Rp32.000,00).

Cheesecake
Based with a yummy pie crust, it was filled with a savory cheesecake. Next, it was layered with sweet delightful milk chocolate and topped with soft and light chocolate cream. An unusual form of cheese cake, but it was pleasingly good! The combination of the savory and sweet is just adorable. Big yum yum.. =9

Cheesecake
A really full of excitement culinary journey to begin this enchanting month. Hoping that many marvelous things will happen in this miraculous month.. Welcome, December!

Tomoto Restaurant 日本レストラン, Dining with Attraction

Seeing this blog again after a very long period brings me back all the memories about my culinary experience.. It is so fun to share all the great food to all of you but I am really sorry for my late update since I've been so busy with coass life.. However I still spend my spare time with eating and trying many good food.. So just in case you are interested in my culinary experience you can follow my instagram @vitia_tandy to get many up to date updates about my culinary experience.. I'll be glad to share =)

Last night I had my new culinary adventure at Tomoto Restaurant 日本レストラン: A Japanese contemporary dining. I went there with my sister, my cousins, my uncles, also my father =) yeap, my father is in Surabaya now.. and just like me, he likes to eat all around.. like father, like daughter =D We ate here as the recommendation from my uncle. We think it would be just a plain japanese dining, in fact last night was awesome. Here is the sneak peek.. 3 letters, W-O-W!

We ordered 5 sets of the Chef's Recommendation Special Wagyu Teppan Set for seven of us. This journey began with this appetizer.. A kind of salad that mixed up carrot, lettuce, raddish, tomato and topped up with dressing..

Salad

Then the chefs began to prepare the teppanyaki.. The word teppanyaki is derived from teppan (鉄板), which means iron plate, and yaki (焼き) which means grilled, boiled, or pan-fried. So that teppanyaki (鉄板焼き) is a style of Japanese cuisine that uses an iron griddle to cook food. Before starting to cook, the chef performed an attraction with their cooking utensils. They juggled the kitchen utensils and made harmony sounds with the iron plate. The show was cool! After that they started to put many ingredients on the iron plate. The ingredients consist of pumpkin, tamago tofu, mushroom, onion, and konnyaku.

Left to right: pumpkin, tofu, mushroom, konnyaku, onion

The next attraction was arranging onion rings into fire-shooting volcano.. Boom!

Arranging onion rings volcano

Fire-shooting onion rings volcano
After waiting for a while, then the first dish was served. Here we go, Konnyaku! Konnyaku (こんにゃく) was made from the root of Amorphophallus konjac, a kind of corm that has a large size. The konnyaku was served with thick sauce and sesame seeds.. It tasted so unique and authentic..

Konnyaku

The next dish was Tamago Tofu.. This was one of the best dish for tonight. This tamago tofu perfectly grilled in precise level of cooked so that the outside texture was a lil' bit crunchy but the inside texture was so soft. Furthermore, the egg flavor was so strong. Yummehh..

Tamago Tofu

So how about the pumpkin, mushroom, and onion rings? They were mixed up together with other vegetables to produce a mixture of teppan vegetables..

It had not stopped yet.. Our journey continued with grilled salmon.. First the slices of salmon were grilled on the top of iron plate with butter then they were marinated and cooked in salmon bones stock.. The chef was performed his job so fast until we cannot catch the picture well.. However, Chef Erwin was so nice to treat us well so finally he made his best pose for us.. great job, chef!

Chef Erwin and the grilled salmon =D
Not waiting for so long, we already got the slices of grilled salmon served with salmon bones stock.. This was one of the best dish too!! The texture of the salmon and especially the flavor of the stock was so great! I loved this one >.<

Grilled salmon served with salmon bones stock
While waiting for the next dish, we also served with Miso Soup.. This authentic japanese soup always fits to others japanese cuisine..
Miso Soup
With a very full stomach, we continued the night with Teppanyaki Fried Rice..

And guess what he made.. A heart shaped fried rice! So cute =D

Here you go, the teppanyaki fried rice.. The buttery flavor was so yummy! Nom nom..

Last main course but not least, Wagyu Beef..

They used the imported wagyu beef and take the strip loin part.. Cut from the short loin, the strip steak consists of a muscle that does little work, and so it is particularly tender. Strip loin also a fine choice due to its tast, melt-in-the-mouth succulence. Just in case you wonder about strip loin, here is a little hint for this part =D

I'm just a normal woman with a limited stomach. Eating all of these made me so increadibly full.. But when it came to dessert time, I think I became a superwoman.. There will be always a space for dessert right?? We can choose on of three dessert available here, which are banana flambe with ice cream, ice cream only, and fresh fruits. It was not a hard choice, right? Lol.. So here I was, chose the Banana Flambe with Ogura Ice Cream as my dessert when my sister chose Banana Flambe with Green Tea Ice Cream. And they made attraction again!

Prepared to be burned :|

They are on fire!!

Banana Flambe with Ogura Ice Cream

Banana Flambe with Green Tea Ice Cream
They tasted so good.. The buttery flavor that attached firmly to the bananas also the sweetness and fascinating flavor of the ice cream mixed well in each bite.. Perfect ending, two thumbs up!

One question. How about the price? To be honest it was quite expensive :( We need to pay Rp395.000,00+ for each of the teppan set. So probably it will be good to have this experience in special occassion. Thanks for reading and please make your own culinary experience =)

Curry House, The Taste of Authentic Japanese Curry

Holiday has ended and I already back to my "hospital life". Entering Internal Medicine department as my new department after holiday is quite shocking. When do the E.R. shift, I think all the Internal Medicine interns have more responsibility in taking care the patient than other departments I've ever passed. However, I still enjoy it except the fact that I always hibernate after doing the shift =P I feel more like a real doctor here =)

This week everyone has a very very long weekend. Since there is public holiday on Thursday, the government also establishes Friday as a holiday. Unfortunately it doesn't work to interns. Holiday means adding your shift more. So I decided to take a treat to myself with some delicious food, hohoho.. This time I decided to eat at Curry House, a quite new Japanese restaurant that specialized in curry. Located at the top of Papaya Supermarket in Darmo, its location is a lil' bit hidden. However, it has a nice and cozy architecture since it is dominated with nature component such as wood and stone. Their eating utensils also are made of wood, so lovely <3

We ordered Garlic Potato (Rp10.000,00+) for appetizer. We can eat it with the salad dressing which adding more flavor into this. Nom nom..
Garlic Potato
The weather is so hot lately and this Strawberry Lassi (Rp30.000,00+ for large size) really helped a lot. It has a sour and fresh of yoghurt combined with the sweetnes of strawberry..
Strawberry Lassi
There are so many curry dishes here, such as chicken, beef, pork, pork cutlet, seafood, tuna, mushroom, or even eggplant curry. Actually I also wanted to order pork cutlet curry but since it looks like chicken katsu curry (that I always order), I wanted to try something different so I ordered Hamburg Curry (Rp60.000,00+ for small size).
Hamburg Curry
When it was served on my table, it looks so small (especially the hamburg beef) =O Based on the price, I actually expected a slight bigger size, but apparently the size is big enough to make me full. The curry flavor is so rich and spicy. The hamburg beef also erased the feeling about its size =P it tastes good >.< oh ya, all the curry dishes here has 7 levels of spiciness (does it sound like a kind of spicy cassava chips? --a) I chose the second level and I think I supposed to ask for the spicier level. But thankfully there was chili powder on the table =D

My sister ordered another style of curry, Dry Curry (Rp50.000,00+ for small size), fried rice with minced beef and curry powder. So unique, so exotic..

Dry Curry
My cousin ordered her favorite menu, Tuna Yaki Curry (Rp80.000,+ for small size), baked rice topped with tuna curry and cheese. Served hot in a pot, it tastes so creamy and cheesy. Lovely but fatty x_x yeah, it really a guilty pleasure..

Are you a big fan of Japanese cuisine or curry lover? Then you should try this one =)

My first 7 months as a clinical intern..

Time walks by so fast and apparently I have done my internship as a co-ass for almost 7 months. I have passed surgery, dermatology and venereology, anesthesiology, obstetric and gynaecology, pharmacy, and the last radiology department. Then here I am in my lovely hometown, Makassar City, for 2 weeks ahead to spend my holiday. Yapp, we get 2 weeks holiday during 1.5 years of our internship. Just a short tiny break that maybe we should call it "pseudoholiday" =P

There are still so many departments that I have to pass after this holiday and the next one is internal medicine department. However, I enjoy my life as an intern so much. I think it is much better than facing all the textbooks and handouts everyday. Although it seems to be so tiring sometimes (especially after doing the night shift without sleeping at all and still have to study for exam), but facing patient face to face and working as a doctor is such a wonderful experience and chance that God has given to me. I hope I will still feel this way (or better) for the rest of my internship period and even more until the rest of my life. Amen... =)

Writing down here in my culinary and traveling blog maybe a lil bit not appropriate to talk about my internship story but if you have good stories, so why don't you share? =)

Surgery department is my first lab as an intern. It was quite shocking because the schedule is so full. The lessons are also so variable since it consists of 9 sub-departments. But here it is, in this department, for the first time I did the real wound suturing. It was a breath taking event when I first came to emergency room (E.R.) for doing my first E.R. shift on that beautiful morning. Then suddenly when I met my friend that had done the shift on the night before, he asked me to enter the minor operation room and do the suturing. What?!?! I just came and I directly have to suture?!? Furthermore, the person that I need to suture is a long-haired guy with a gangster face x__x Thankfully I and my friends could pass it well =) the other story from surgery department is when I met a 5 years old boy with cancer in his brain. The cancer decreased his consciousness, so that he only could see with blank stares and could not talk anymore. I still remember that night when I sat there with his mom and listen her sharing their beautiful moments together until she couldn't resist to cry. Another unforgettable moment when one of pediatric surgery resident allowed me to cut hernial sac during my night shift at operation room, wohoo! =D

Anesthesiology made another great experience. Involved in preoperative examination, anesthetized the patient, woke them up, until followed up their recovery makes me know further about the patient anxiety, hope, and feeling about their surgery treatment. I also learn to do the intensive care at ICU, such as doing the suction in the appropriate way or even communicate with body language to patient who had run tracheostomy =P Story from rescucitation room (RES) is amazing too. CPR and defibrillation always make us looks like the real doctors, lol.. But seeing the patient passed away while their family standing besides and crying out was not a good moment. However it keeps remind me that Lord Jesus is still the real Doctor above all the doctors in this world and He takes control above all.

Obstetric and gynaecology gave us a bunch of stories to tell. But one thing for sure, take this note "labor pain is super duper painful so love your mother because delivering you to this world is just like an intersection between her life and death". There are unforgettable stories too here. I met a lovely mother (keep worrying about her baby condition and asked me a lot of things about how would the labor and delivery happen, yet thank me so much and ask me to come after she delivers the baby), funky mother (using piercing and telling her love story),  fierce mother (yelling out loud during the night that she wanted to poop instead of her laboring pain), and so many more. Paradoxically, in this department I also met women who had late stadium cancer, must loss her baby, and many others sad condition.

Dermatology and venerology, pharmacy, and radiology have their own story too. But I think this post is quite long already so I need to end up here. I hope the next departments will give me a bunch of great experience and build me to be a great Christian Doctor in the future, amen =) (please say amen too =P)

Since I am in my hometown now, I remember about my tumblr which I have before I started to make this blog. I already wrote down some of my culinary experiences in Makassar there. Probably I wanna share them here soon =) please enjoy ^^

Toast Jam Factory, "you toast we jam"!

Heihoo, finally my first post as an medical intern or also known as "dokter muda" or co-ass.. Thanks to cece Elita who forced me to update my blog, hehe.. There are so many great experience since becoming an intern.. Meet a bunch of patients with unique disease, take care of them, help delivering babies, involve in surgeries, do CPR (as in movies minus mouth-to-mouth breathing control =P), meet many great seniors and residents, and so many more.. All of them makes me realize how lucky I am to be a future doctor and keep making me so thankful to God.. Like they said, to become a doctor is such a great privilege.. Thanks, Lord Jesus :)

Okay, let's go to my new culinary experience.. Toast jam factory! A brand new simple cafe with unique concept and white atmosphere.. I went here with my beautiful best friend, Jing2, for a nice saturday night chit chat..

First of all, we had ice teh susu (Rp15.000,00+).. The tea flavor is perfectly match with the milk and created a great blend.. nice taste =D ow ya, they served the milk tea with jars which makes them so cute >.<
Ice teh susu

Next is chocolate and cheese toast (Rp15.000,00+).. There are two size of toast served here.. medium and large one.. The medium one only consist of one slice of bread while the large one are two.. And yeah, we ordered the large one =D

Chocolate and Cheese Toast - Large
I think they use the nutella spread which make it tasty =) The bread is also so soft..

Next is kaya origininal toast (RP12.000,00+).. Unfortunately, there is no thing so special with this one.. I prefer yakun kaya toast or my hometown homemade kaya spread more than this..

Kaya Original Toast

Last but not least, ham and cheese salad (Rp15.000,00+).. They served the ham and cheese not in great proportion with the vegetables =( hmm, and less seasoning too =|
